Cryogenic electron microscopy (Cryo-EM) has revolutionized medical research, but the substrate used to freeze and visualize samples under a microscope has not progressed for decades. Today, thanks to the collaboration between Penn State researchers and the company of applied science, Protochips.

“The nature of the traditional network has not changed much since the foundation of cryogenics, while material science has changed dramatically,” said Deb Kelly, director of the Center for Structural Oncology (CSO) and professor of biomedical technology at Penn State. “Our team, with other researchers in the area, came up with the thought of trying new materials to perk up existing practices.”

Issues with traditional perforated carbon grids include patchy surfaces when ice is formed on the grid, which requires numerous adjustments to the imaging routines; grid materials expand at dissimilar thermal speeds and the failure of the samples to turn over through the grid openings, often wasting limited samples.

“Setting only initial reconciliation parameters helps save time for data collection,” says assistant research professor at CSO, Cameron Varano. “Protochips substrates are made of silicon nitride, a material that is stiffer than carbon grids, making them less prone to local deformations. And the wells in the chips can be adjusted for different thicknesses of ice and applications.”

In the article entitled Klein entitled “Cryo-EM-on-a-Chip: Substrates Under Measurement for 3D Analysis of Macromolecules,” the team shortlisted three case studies in which such an image could be useful. The first study was a comparison between the perforated carbon network and the Cryo chip using the standard rotavirus particle model in the Cryo-EM studies owing to its large size and symmetrical shape. They found greater contrast with the Cryo-Chip substrate, as well as more sample retention in tuned wells.

In the first of these studies in the United States, the researchers that pre-school children with chronic constipation and normal development have underlying sensory problems that make them more intricate to adopt. These children are often not easy to select and may be overly sensitive to the textures, tastes, or odors of food. They may also have an inflated reaction to bright lights, sounds, or other sensory stimuli. The results are published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

“Our study is groundbreaking and unveils that chronic constipation in young children is one with increased sensory sensitivity,” says Mark Fishbein, MD, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Hospital. “In many cases, chronic constipation may be the first indication that the child may also have sensory problems and may benefit from occupational therapy. Nutritional problems due to sensory sensitivity are particularly common in these children and are best treated when children younger than 5 years old before maladaptive behavior becomes more entrenched. “

In this study, Dr. Fishbein and colleagues examined the differences in sensory processing patterns in 66 children aged 3–5 Years with chronic constipation and a similar group of 66 Years. They also investigated the correlation between the children’s sensory profiles and the atypical behavior of the toilet. They found that children with chronic constipation presented an increased response to avoidance behavior and sensory stimuli. Increased oral sensory processing sensitivity to textures, flavors, or odors in food has emerged as the most crucial factor in predicting a child’s tendency to exhibit behavior, such as not avoiding toilets in general or storing bowel movements.

“Our research provides a comprehensive toolkit for doctors who care for children with chronic constipation,” said Dr. Fishbein. “The full management of these children should also take into account sensory issues and a possible referral to occupational therapy.”

Recently, China’s auto industry has struck a soft patch, but there might be an intense spot to it. The sales of auto have decreased in China for straight 9 Months, including a 5.2% drop down in March. The electric-powered cars were on display from foreign auto giants and start-ups alike at Shanghai Auto Show. For few in the industry, they state it would be the smartphone-like crossing point of the new vehicles that would truly attract consumers. Those buyers are ever more using internet-linked services like daily food delivery, especially in China. The so-called novel energy vehicles are flourishing, with sales climbing 62% in the last year. And not just due to the way they are powered.

Fu Qiang—President and Co-Founder of Aiways (electric vehicle start-up)—said, “The key point is smart and not new energy.” Fu is a CEO and former president of Volvo Cars China. The 9-Month decline in automobile sales in the largest vehicle market globally has many worried regarding a significant drop down in the Chinese financial system and the wallets of a populace of over 1 Billion. In the last year, insecurity about the fight from the U.S.-China trade spat and Beijing’s attempts to lower reliance on debt for development put a chill on investment, particularly on big-ticket items like cars. Alan Kang—Senior Market Analyst at LMC Automotive—said that most of the dropdown in auto sales in the past 2 Years was the outcome of a tough comparison with rapid development in 2016.

On a similar note, recently, President Trump’s trade war forced Volvo Cars to move in South Carolina. Reportedly, Volvo is a Chinese-owned Swedish firm manufacturing cars in the U.S. When it determined to set up a division in South Carolina to manufacture cars to ship across the globe, it was following a long tradition. But in advance the plant was unveiled in last year, Trump changed America’s approach toward trade policy.

Extremely hazardous effects of highly energized beam released by the sun and cosmic rays on humans are prevented due to the shield created by the Earth’s magnetic field. The shield doesn’t allow the harmful matter to enter the Earth’s surface. However, in the duration of around every 10 Years, a sudden variation in the strength of the magnetic field has been identified, known as a geomagnetic jerk.

The sudden lurch in the field intensity usually does not extend for more than a few years and possibly modify the Earth’s magnetism over specific regions at a time. The first jerk of this kind was observed in Western European regions in the Year 1969. Since then, in a gap of around 10 Years, a new jerk has been observed at random regions in the world. Researchers are still unaware of the actual cause of these jerks.

Several geomagnetic phenomena, such as aurora occurs due to the collision between the electrified solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere. The jerks are considered to generate from the core of the planet, which generates the magnetic field continuously by the constant churning of liquefied iron. But the actual mechanism behind this is still not clear.

Recently, researchers have developed a computer-based simulated model revealing the activities occurring inside the Earth’s core. The study is published this week only in the journal Nature Geoscience. Based on the study findings, the possible way by which jerks are generated due to the release of a buoyant splash of molten matter from the central region of the core.

The newly constructed model developed by the researchers meticulously analyze and demonstrate the physical conditions of Earth’s core surface, and shows the evolutionary modifications that have possibly been occurred over the past several decades.

Another study associated with the Earth’s core revealed that the sudden variations in the flow of core could negligibly slowdown the rotational speed of the Earth.

A new study found that a specially crafted computer program could aid in diagnosing PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) in veterans by testing their voices. The study was published in the journal Depression and Anxiety. The study found that an AI (artificial intelligence) tool can differentiate—with almost 89% accuracy—amongst the voices of those having PTSD or not having PTSD. Charles R. Marmar—Senior Study Author and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry from NYU School of Medicine—said, “Our results suggest that speech-based traits can be utilized to identify this disease and with further modification and validation, might be used in the clinic in the upcoming time.”

Over 70% of adults globally encounter a traumatic incident at some point in their lives, with a minimum of 12% of people in some struggling nations undergoing from PTSD. Those with the medical condition experience persistent and strong distress when reminiscence about a triggering event. The study authors state that PTSD identification is most often decided by a self-report assessment or clinical interview, both naturally prone to biases. This has induced efforts to advance objective, measurable, physical indicators of PTSD progression, much like lab values for medical circumstances, but the improvement has been slow. In the present study, the research group utilized a statistical and machine learning technique—known as random forests—having the capability to “learn” how to categorize individuals on the basis of examples.

On a similar note, recently, a study tracked a link amid PTSD healing utilization and compensation exams. According to a recent study by YU’s (Yale University) Department of Psychiatry researchers, veterans who wanted compensation for job-related PTSD were more possibly to attend PTSD-correlated treatment sessions prior to their compensation exams than later, but only if the experts had strong beliefs on a treatment-compensation connection. The study was published in PLOS One.

YouTube has upgraded its hate speech guidelines to prohibit more kinds of clips from its service. They clearly comprise those glorifying or promoting Nazi philosophy or deny that specific events comprising the Sandy Hook shooting or the Holocaust took place. Consequently, YouTube will eliminate a number of videos and channels below the renovated rules.

“Now, we are taking one more step in our hate speech guideline by specifically banning videos blaming that a group is better in order to justify segregation, discrimination, or exclusion on the basis of qualities such as gender, age, caste, race, sexual orientation, religion, or veteran status,” it claimed in a blog post. It also bans clips that market hatred or violence against groups or people based on nationality, disability, or immigration status as well as “victims of a primary violent occasion and their family.”

YouTube did not offer any instances of the videos or channels that might be banned. The policy upgrade arrives as YouTube is involved in yet one more controversy about the occurrence of hate speech on its service. It declined to pull clips posted by a right-wing commentator blamed of assaulting a reporter with racist and homophobic comment.

On a related note, after a substantial amount of public disgracing, YouTube declared this week that it will no longer let Steven Crowder (controversial conservative commentator) to make profit from videos on his channel. The move follows after the firm refused to pull a sequence of videos posted by the YouTuber in which he employed bigoted and homophobic language to refer Carlos Maza (Vox writer).

“Upgrade on our sustained review—we have banned monetization of this channel,” the firm claimed to the media in an interview. “We came to this decision since a pattern of egregious measures has injured the wider community and is against our policies.”

About $150 million is to be invested by General Motor on its Truck Assembly Plant in Flint.

The company is planning to spend its investment to step up its production of heavy-duty pickups, GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado. The money will be spent on factory conveyors and other tools related to it.

Mark Reuss, the GM President has commented on his new investment saying that this is a tremendous opportunity to grow in heavy-duty pickup truck business.

He claims that the new Chevrolet and HD pickups are strong, tough and capable as heavy-duty pickups and the Flint team will be able to meet the challenge to produce world-class products that will bring in growth.

The GM Assembly plant at Flint has been pumped with around $1.6 billion investment right from 2013. With this allocation of money, the factory has been able to increase its pickup vehicles by 40,000 units per year. Additionally, 1,000 new jobs have been provided early this year. Production capacity has been increased in the factory.

The 2020 heavy-duty models Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra will be shipped to dealers by this week. Their styling details are different. One factor that is most differentiating is that Multipro tailgate of Sierra HD has six different settings, which also includes its functioning as a workbench and a staircase.

There are more body styles coming. The regular Sierra HD is the regular one with room for a backseat and is handy as a hard-working truck.

The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have had high volume sales, up by 20 percent for the first quarter of 2019, when compared to the previous year sales volume.

With this investment in Flint and Fort Wayne, GM intends to strengthen its truck and SUV business. GM opened its Flint Assembly in 1947 and is committed to delivering safer and sustainable ways in using these vehicles.

Scientists are researching the effects of technology on individual brains. They wish to know the effect of the Internet on brains. Five university research teams from USA, UK, and Australia have stated that neuroplasticity could have a significant influence on human brains. Young adults and children are most affected since they still have developing brains. WHO recommends not more than one hour of screen time for kids less than five years of age.

Capacity for concentration and attention, social cognition and memory processes were the areas under review. By analyzing previous findings, this team could find results in each sector. Harvard, WSY, Oxford and Manchester University researchers took part, with findings published in World Psychiatry journal. Digital multitasking abilities did not enhance multitasking abilities in the real world and increased distraction-proneness. Joseph Firth of NICM HRI stated that notifications and prompts from Internet caused divided attention to become the norm.

Memory studies found that humans are now able to concentrate on ambitious tasks since memorizing facts wasn’t required anymore. Spatial memory was also impacted since most people now check online for navigating routes.

Social interaction studies showed real-life interactions and online interactions to be processed similarly. However, youngsters were susceptible to rejection feelings and peer pressure that arose from social media interactions. Links between mental health conditions and internet usage weren’t found but those with mental health issues could be helped via social media. Older adults who feel isolated, however, could be positively affected by social media.

However, all research done so far has to be backed up by further studies. Dr. Torous of HMS stated that much remains to be learned about digital world impact on brain health. While benefits were found, risks followed as well. He believed that Internet usage could alter brain structure & functioning along with societal social fabric.

Professor Sarris advises reducing online multitasking, more real-world engagement and practicing mindfulness. Internet access could be restricted among children via various apps. Talking to them about their exploitation, cyber-bullying episodes or addictive behaviors could reduce adverse outcomes as well, he added.

Plant-based diets are linked with a lower threat of heart failure in adult individuals without known heart disease. At the same time, the Southern diets with more processed & fried foods and sweetened drinks are linked with higher risk, as per the study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The latest study looked at the link between five dietary prototypes and threat of heart failure.

Heart failure impacts over 5.7 Million adult individuals. According to the reports, this number is estimated to rise. Presently, heart failure prevention plans emphasize on managing high blood pressure, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy diet & weight to avoid heart disease. However, the study is limited to dietary prototypes and incident heart failure in individuals without heart disease. In this study, researchers analyzed about five major dietary prototypes.

On a similar note, the Global Burden of Disease Study came into the news as it looked at dietary expenditure between 1990 and 2017. This study was carried out in about 195 countries. It was focused on about 15 types of nutrients or food. In a recent paper featured in the journal The Lancet, the study scientists concluded that, in 2017, owing to its contribution to noncommunicable diseases, poor diet led to 1 in 5, or 11 Million, adult demises.

The most of those demises, approximately 10 Million, were due to cardiovascular disease. The rest were largely from type 2 diabetes and cancer. If the countries are ranked from lowest to highest rates of diet-associated deaths, this rank puts Israel first. The country witnesses 89 deaths per 100,000 individuals. At the same time, in this list, Uzbekistan is on the last number with about 892 per 100,000 individuals. The U.S., with 171 demises per 100,000, rests in at a 43rd place.
