There are around2800 stores under this brand. The minimum expectation from ventures as big as Kroger is that they will not sell contaminated products to its loyal customers, especially the ones who trust them blindly as far as quality is concerned. It doesn’t seem to be the case though as an official word has come out from the US Food and Drug Administration warning consumers about the frozen blackberries that were sold by Kroger in the “Private Selection” section, stating that they may be tainted with Hepatitis A.

According to the statement by the FDA, the berries should be thrown away instead of being eaten by the people and if anyone has already done it and have previously not been vaccinated against Hepatitis A, they should probably consult a doctor immediately. There are a few other items as well that have been put under the cautionary list by the FDA, especially for people who have shown symptoms of being sick on eating the frozen items. A list of it includes frozen triple berry medley from the private selection and weighing 48 oz., frozen triple berry medley belonging to the Private Selection and the weight being 16 oz., and frozen blackberries weighing 16 oz. and belonging to the Private Selection section as well.

Though there have been no reported cases of contamination from the above three products, since they all are kept together in one section, chances of contact transmission are more. What is more alarming is the fact that the Center of Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration have not been able to figure out the source of the infection of Hepatitis A and are still trying to figure it out.

Obesity and overweight are two health conditions that have affected a majority of the population around the world mainly because of the damaging lifestyle that people lead nowadays. As if there weren’t enough ways to gain weight unprecedented, recent research has revealed that sleeping with some form of light on, whether it be from a television or a nightlight of average brightness, it can lead to an increase in weight gain which can eventually lead to obesity.

When a person slept with their television on or with a small light in the room, they could gain almost 5 kg in 5 years, according to statistics in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal. When all the confounding factors were taken care of, the chances of the weight gain by 5 kilograms stood at almost 17% with the chances of becoming overweight at 22% and for obese it is 33%. The reason why this study is so significant is because of the fact that obesity has become a nation-wide epidemic, especially in developing countries like the United States and the prevention of it is also equally difficult because of the routine followed these days and the type of diet consumed. At least, once some insight is gained with respect to it, a public message can be issued about not sleeping with the lights on in order to prevent weight gain.

A cohort study was conducted using data of 43,722 women who fell within the age bracket of 35 to 74 and who enrolled in a Sister Study within the year 2003 to 2009. They were divided into four categories—no light, small light in the room, the light outside the room and some source of light present on the outside. The two extremes were taken as women who slept with some kind of lights on as a high exposure level and the ones with nothing on and sleeping in the dark as low exposure level. When the Body Mass Index, which is a good indicator of weight gain, was calculated, it was noticed that the women under the category of high exposure gained weight by almost 5kgs and had a BMI increment of 10%. Though there are a few limitations to this study, it does point out something significant and probably more in-depth studies need to be conducted.

Individuals With Extra Finger On Hands Have Enhanced Motor Skills http://marketnewswire24.us/828/individuals-with-extra-finger-on-hands-have-enhanced-motor-skills/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=individuals-with-extra-finger-on-hands-have-enhanced-motor-skills Sun, 16 Jun 2019 13:29:36 +0000 http://marketnewswire24.us/?p=828 Some people in world have more number of fingers in hands and more toes on feet than normal and this condition is termed as polydactyly. Though some doctors consider it as malformation but the question is—is polydactyly beneficial for individuals?

According to estimations, at least one baby in every 700 to 1000 babies born has polydactyly. As polydactyly is extremely unusual, some people consider it to be an anomaly or malformation. The doctors can surgically remove this extra toe or finger at the time of birth because they do not think these digits to be useful. They do this because they are concerned regarding self image of child later in life.

Though it may be otherworldly aesthetic, the thing that stands out is that polydactyly can bring few practical benefits to individuals.

This thing is concluded by a study done at University of Freiburg, Germany. The research published in a magazine puts forward a consideration that people having polydactyly have extra dexterity for movement in comparison to their counterparts having fewer digits.

This was a small study that involved two volunteers having fully developed six fingers on both the hands. One volunteer was an old woman of 52 years and the other volunteer was a 17 year old boy.

The researcher Carsten Mehring said that they wanted to collect information regarding whether the subjects have enhanced motor skills as compared to the people having five fingers. They also wanted to know the ability of brain to control the extra fingers.

Those two volunteers were asked by researchers for engaging themselves in different tasks while they were recording the activity of their brain using functional MRI. This activity revealed that the extra fingers work independently and are moved by their muscles. Prof. Mehring said that the subjects were able to use the extra digit independently like a thumb or together with other fingers which makes manipulation skillful and versatile.

Researchers have noticed that the resistance is so powerful that it can lead back to an era where people died due to minor infections. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has tagged this infection as a serious threat to humans.

The infection is caused by the fungus Candida albicans which can cause many serious issues like denture-related stomatitis and oral thrush being major among them. Mira Edgerton, a research professor at The University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, New York, said that this fungus ranks at fourth position when it comes to bloodstream infections. Edgerton is also a co-lead author of a new study which provides details about any innovative way to preventing Candida infections.

She also said that here are only 3 major categories of antifungal drugs and no new type of antifungal drug has been detected in years.

She tells that Candida being the most widespread fungus in oral microbiome, depends on the saliva for surviving. It needs iron, which is also the second most prevailing metal in saliva, to renew its DNA and produce energy.

The professor with her team gave deferasirox to kick out candida. Deferasirox is a drug used to treat blood disorders. An experiment was done on mice where they were given the drug which lowers the iron level in the saliva. The C. albicans were deprived of their essential nutrient and thus their survival rate dropped from 25% to 12%.

According to Sumant Puri, another co-lead author of the study, this is the first study that states lack of iron can decreases the rate of survival of C. albicans. He also ensured that deferasirox can be used as a preventive treatment as it did not cause deficiency of iron in the mouse model.

The mortality rates are declining, says the latest annual report on the status of Cancer. The report has appeared in the National Cancer Institute journal. The study was a joint effort of the (ACS) American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, the (NAACCR) North American Association of Central Cancer Registries and the (CDC) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The deaths by cancer in men, women and children declined in 1999–2016, says the report. While researchers examined the information from the year 2011–2015, looked at cancer sites, and went through data of all age group, the incidence rate in men was 1.2 times higher than women. The death rate of men was 1.4 times higher than in women in 2012–2016. But the report threw light on demographics where these numbers weren’t promising. In the age group of 20-49, there were few differences like when it came to rates in women and men, the rates were not reflecting then cancer rates in entirety.

When scientists looked at only this age, women have higher rate of incidence for invasive cancers—115.3 men per 100,000 individuals and 203.3 women per 100,000 individuals.

In 2012–2016, women had higher death rate due to cancer – 27.1 women per 100,000 individuals and 22.8 men per 100,000 individuals.

In the age group of 20–49, breast cancer was common in women, and then came thyroid cancer and then melanoma. Colorectal cancer was common in men, followed by testis cancer and melanoma.

As per ACS, women and men in the US have 1 out of 3 chance of getting invasive cancer. When it comes to men, the prostate cancer is most common, while when it comes to women, most common is breast cancer. The study also notes that the risk of getting cancer rises with age, with 9 in 10 cancers affect those who are aged 50 years and above. Genetics also play an important role; 5-10% cancers are associated to genes.

New Compound Enhances Effectiveness Of Chemo In Cancer Treatment http://marketnewswire24.us/811/new-compound-enhances-effectiveness-of-chemo-in-cancer-treatment/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=new-compound-enhances-effectiveness-of-chemo-in-cancer-treatment Fri, 14 Jun 2019 06:57:31 +0000 http://marketnewswire24.us/?p=811 Scientists might have found something to stop the cancer cells from becoming resistant to chemotherapy. In a new study, blocking a pathway of DNA repair prevented them from surviving against treatment. The professor of the American Cancer Society, Graham Walker, is the senior author of this study. In his earlier research, Walker examined a process of DNA repair that cancer cells depend on for avoiding chemotherapy’s damage. The process is called TLS (translesion synthesis).

Researchers explain that healthy cells normally repair our DNA by correctly removing the damage in DNA. However, when these cells turn cancerous, they no longer depend on the normal system of repair. Instead, they begin using TLS that is not very accurate.

TLS uses the specialized TLS – DNA polymerases. These Polymerases are nothing but enzymes which make DNA copies. The DNA polymerases copy the DNA correctly, but the TLS DNA polymerases don’t copy the damaged DNA accurately.

This imperfect process of DNA replication process leads to alterations which make the cancer cells become resistant to treatments that damage DNA. An associate professor at MIT said that as these TLS DNA polymerases are prone to error, these are accountable for all the alterations that are induced by drugs such as cisplatin, says the co-senior author of study Michael Hemann.

Cisplatin is a drug of chemotherapy that are prescribed for treating various forms of cancer, like head, bladder, lung, neck, testicular and ovarian cancers. Cisplatin works when it interferes with the repair of DNA, causing the damage of DNA, and eventually causing the death of cancer cell.

Deleting only one gene could completely prevent the pancreatic cancer.

But, cancer cells are most of the times resistant to cisplatin. The drug has many side effects like allergic reactions, kidney problems, decreased immunity, hearing loss, hemorrhage and gastrointestinal disorders. Therefore in the new study researchers are set to enhance the drug’s power. Hemann said that it is well-known that these chemotherapies that are used normally, if they are not curing you, then they are making you worse.

It has been found by a milestone study that, a revolutionary drug, which enhances existence for women with breast cancer might delay development of prostate cancer in men. According to the British trials, the handling that can be too cast-off to treat ovarian cancer may help up to four-thousand men each year, postponing the moment when the illness develops fatal. Charities said that they were very thrilled regarding the discoveries from the research conducted by the Royal Marsden Hospital and ICR, Institute of Cancer Research.

Olaparib, the drug is previously subsidized on the NHS for women having ovarian cancer powered by BRCA gene mutations and will shortly be established for its usage for breast cancer. Afterward Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, the injured DNA has been named as the Jolie gene, who experienced ovary removal and double mastectomy to cut the risk of cancer. Now, it has been found by the research that, the handling worked in nearly 80% of men having prostate disease, and were undergoing from similar mutations. The sickness was delayed by the drug for an average of 8 months, even though the patients had progressive disease.

Additionally, one among three were permitted of development for almost one year. Doctors said that, the handling from a class of drugs known as PARP inhibitors can develop the 1st to use gene directing to compete prostate cancer. They believe the handling that works by discontinuing cells from revamping themselves later radiotherapy or chemotherapy might be obtainable in Britain in the upcoming two years. Probably, almost every year 47,000 men are analyzed with prostate cancer in UK, causing 11,000 deaths. The tumors of 592 men was screened by the study, and found almost one in four had variations in two or more genes linked to injured DNA, most frequently due to mutations of BRCA.

Plant-based diets are linked with a lower threat of heart failure in adult individuals without known heart disease. At the same time, the Southern diets with more processed & fried foods and sweetened drinks are linked with higher risk, as per the study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The latest study looked at the link between five dietary prototypes and threat of heart failure.

Heart failure impacts over 5.7 Million adult individuals. According to the reports, this number is estimated to rise. Presently, heart failure prevention plans emphasize on managing high blood pressure, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy diet & weight to avoid heart disease. However, the study is limited to dietary prototypes and incident heart failure in individuals without heart disease. In this study, researchers analyzed about five major dietary prototypes.

On a similar note, the Global Burden of Disease Study came into the news as it looked at dietary expenditure between 1990 and 2017. This study was carried out in about 195 countries. It was focused on about 15 types of nutrients or food. In a recent paper featured in the journal The Lancet, the study scientists concluded that, in 2017, owing to its contribution to noncommunicable diseases, poor diet led to 1 in 5, or 11 Million, adult demises.

The most of those demises, approximately 10 Million, were due to cardiovascular disease. The rest were largely from type 2 diabetes and cancer. If the countries are ranked from lowest to highest rates of diet-associated deaths, this rank puts Israel first. The country witnesses 89 deaths per 100,000 individuals. At the same time, in this list, Uzbekistan is on the last number with about 892 per 100,000 individuals. The U.S., with 171 demises per 100,000, rests in at a 43rd place.

After the announcement by the Food and Drug Administration in the Year 2016 that raised the possibility of revealing additional sugar amount on the labels for the nutritional-drink manufacturers, research was initiated at Tufts University to determine the potential impact of the provision on the overall health of the U.S. consumers.

The authorized mathematical model predicted a significant decline in cases related to type-II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases over the next 20 years. The research findings are published this week in the journal Circulation.

On a daily basis, the U.S. citizens generally intake over 300 calories through added sugars and its leading source is sugary drinks, followed by desserts such as candy, ice cream, and cookies.

Dr. Renata Micha—a professor at Tufts—said that the purpose behind conducting this study was to evaluate the action of the FDA’s approach on sugary drinks manufacturers regarding added sugars mentioning labels, which could cut down the sugar intake and prevent the development of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Based on the predictive outcomes of the research, more than 600,000 cases of type-II diabetes and 354,000 cardiovascular disease cases can be prevented during the span of twenty years, between 2018 and 2037. This approach could prevent global spending worth $31 Billion in healthcare.

Earlier, a similar scenario came into existence, when the FDA instructed that clear labeling of trans-fats would be done on packaged items. Due to which many food manufacturers began redeveloping their production methods in a best possible way to avoid the use of trans-fats.

The researchers are anticipating even superior impact from the incorporation of sugar label on the products, with cut down of almost 700,000 heart disease cases and impressive decrease in diagnosis cases, which would be around 1.2 Million. The overall healthcare saving could reach more than $57 Billion.

In the first of these studies in the United States, the researchers that pre-school children with chronic constipation and normal development have underlying sensory problems that make them more intricate to adopt. These children are often not easy to select and may be overly sensitive to the textures, tastes, or odors of food. They may also have an inflated reaction to bright lights, sounds, or other sensory stimuli. The results are published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

“Our study is groundbreaking and unveils that chronic constipation in young children is one with increased sensory sensitivity,” says Mark Fishbein, MD, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Hospital. “In many cases, chronic constipation may be the first indication that the child may also have sensory problems and may benefit from occupational therapy. Nutritional problems due to sensory sensitivity are particularly common in these children and are best treated when children younger than 5 years old before maladaptive behavior becomes more entrenched. “

In this study, Dr. Fishbein and colleagues examined the differences in sensory processing patterns in 66 children aged 3–5 Years with chronic constipation and a similar group of 66 Years. They also investigated the correlation between the children’s sensory profiles and the atypical behavior of the toilet. They found that children with chronic constipation presented an increased response to avoidance behavior and sensory stimuli. Increased oral sensory processing sensitivity to textures, flavors, or odors in food has emerged as the most crucial factor in predicting a child’s tendency to exhibit behavior, such as not avoiding toilets in general or storing bowel movements.

“Our research provides a comprehensive toolkit for doctors who care for children with chronic constipation,” said Dr. Fishbein. “The full management of these children should also take into account sensory issues and a possible referral to occupational therapy.”
